Portrait Special

​

Portrait Special is a 15-part lessonon Tuesday evening from 12 September 2023 to January 9, 2024 from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM where you will paint a portrait of yourself, family member or loved one using the classical method. If you want to take these lessons and do not have a model available, the teacher has an example model to paint. The lessons are given by Marco Krauwinkel.

Before classes

​

On SaturdayAugust 26 2023 Between 10:00 and 16:00 you come to the classroom with the person you want to portray to make a photo session, so that we can use this in the coming lessons as a starting point for the final portrait.

We will photograph and paint the person portrayed from head to shoulders.

Additional information regarding the model

​

To capture someone in a classic way, it is important that the person who will be portrayed wears neutral clothing during the photo session (think of black, brown, gray, dark red, without elaborate patterns in clothing). After all, the emphasis is placed on the face and the light that falls on it.

Structure of the lesson

​

During the lessons we will work with a model of your choice, which we will set up in black and white (grisaille). We then work with oil paint, in shades of black and white. During the first lesson we will work with oil paint and create different light/dark tones with paint and we will start with the underpainting of the model using the raster method in order to get the proportions correctly on the canvas/panel, and can always fall back on the grid method, which is a very nice, helpful and extremely reliable method. In the following lessons we will focus on color with a limited palette, so that we then apply color over the grisaille and have the grisaille/underpainting as a basis for mixing the correct tone in color.

Portrait grisaille painting is one of the best ways to master oil painting, color painting is a lot easier afterward.

This method teaches you how to create tonally very strong portraits.

With this method you learn to trust your own perception and develop the necessary sense of form and tone.
